Knowledge and Application Range of Double-sided Adhesive Materials

Double-sided tape is a roll-shaped adhesive tape made by evenly coating elastic pressure-sensitive adhesive or resin pressure-sensitive adhesive on a base material such as paper, cloth, or plastic film. It consists of three parts: the base material, adhesive, and release liner (film).


Based on the adhesive nature, it can be classified into solvent-based adhesive tape (oil-based double-sided tape), latex-based adhesive tape (water-based double-sided tape), hot melt adhesive tape, calendered adhesive tape, and reactive adhesive tape. It is widely used in leather, nameplates, stationery, electronics, automotive trim fixing, footwear, papermaking, handicrafts positioning, and other applications.

Types of Double-sided Tapes:

Grid double-sided tape, reinforcement double-sided tape, rubber double-sided tape, high-temperature double-sided tape, non-woven double-sided tape, residue-free double-sided tape, tissue double-sided tape, double-sided glass cloth tape, PET double-sided tape, foam double-sided tape, etc. They are used in various industries' production processes.

Composition of Double-sided Tape:

Based on non-woven fabric, cloth, PET film, fiberglass, PVC, PE foam, acrylic, etc., elastic pressure-sensitive adhesive or resin pressure-sensitive adhesive is evenly coated on the aforementioned base material to make a roll-shaped adhesive tape, consisting of the base material, adhesive, and release liner (or silicone-coated paper).


Production methods:

1. Protection Tape:

Made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film as the base material, coated with special rubber-type pressure-sensitive adhesive, it is easy to tear, residue-free, easy to process and adhere. It is suitable for surface protection of furniture, speakers, wood grain boards, shoe materials, colored steel materials, aluminum alloy doors and windows, etc., to prevent wear and reduce item loss.

2. Electrical Tape:

Made of soft polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film as the base material, coated with UL special rubber-type pressure-sensitive adhesive, it has good insulation, flame resistance, voltage resistance, cold resistance, etc. It is suitable for wiring harnesses, wire winding, insulation protection, demagnetization coils, communication wiring, etc.

3. Industrial Tape:

Made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film as the base material, coated with special rubber-type pressure-sensitive adhesive, it has good conformability, acid and alkali resistance, wear resistance, good oil resistance, and color fading resistance. It is suitable for road signs, columns, warning areas, and pipe protection.

4. Packaging Tape:

Made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film as the base material, coated with special rubber-type pressure-sensitive adhesive, it has the advantages of easy tearability, strong adhesion, good weather resistance, and strong tensile strength. It is suitable for sealing and fixing high-end and heavy packaging.

Application Range:

1. Chemicals: desiccant packaging, preservatives.

2. Food: tea packaging, melon seed bags, bread bags, burger packaging, sugar packaging, coffee packaging bags.

3. Paper: copperplate paper packaging, coated paper packaging, photocopy paper (neutral paper).

4. Household: salt packaging, paper cup paper.

5. Pharmaceutical packaging: medical equipment packaging, traditional Chinese medicine packaging, pesticide packaging.

6. Others: test paper, aviation bags, seed bag paper, silicone-coated paper for making self-adhesive labels, kraft paper tape, anti-rust packaging with rust preventive oil, disposable travel products.


When die-cutting double-sided adhesive products, release liner is generally used. However, how to choose release liner for die-cutting double-sided adhesive products and what are the requirements for release liner? Let's take a look at the following requirements:

1. Some papers are easy to peel off when pasting, but become difficult to peel off after one cycle (24 hours), and cannot be peeled off after three cycles.

Such release liner is mainly unstable, with poor paper density and uneven coating. Its anti-permeability is weak, so the adhesive can penetrate into the release liner during one cycle, making it impossible to peel off. Therefore, it is necessary to use release liner with better density, better paper quality, uniform silicone coating, and more stable properties as the base paper.

2. Poor peeling of imported double-sided tape is a common phenomenon because the physical properties of imported double-sided tape are different.

Commonly used brands include 3M, Nitto, Sony, JiShui, TESA, etc., with or without substrate. Many die-cutting manufacturers use one type of release liner for convenience, which leads to poor peeling. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the adhesion of the tape and separate the release liner when the adhesion of the tape varies greatly.

3. The tape that is usually used for sticking may be difficult to waste discharge after die-cutting or cannot be peeled off because the die-cutting product is too small.

In such cases, attention should be paid. Some tapes are easily carried away during the waste discharge process, indicating that the peel strength is too light, and a slightly heavier peel strength can be tried. If it cannot be peeled off or peels off poorly (especially those without substrate), it is normal because the die-cutting products have small areas. If the peel strength is not light enough, it may cause deformation during the peeling process. Therefore, a lighter release liner should be used.
